Acronym

You will not be provided an equations sheet on this test. You must know all equations. How intimidating! BUT if you use your scrap paper (back of your test ticket) and record equations before you get nervous on the test, then you can refer back to it throughout the test.

J-Lab Practice

Released 2014 Full-Length Test

Below is a full-length SOL Test for you to practice (administered to testers in Spring 2014). It is very challenging! Remember to look for ways that your knowledge fits into the question. They will try to throw in new situations and vocabulary you have never heard of. That is ok! You must see how what you have studied in the course can help you choose the best answer.

SOL Chemistry Released Question Bank

The following PDF takes all Chemistry SOL questions that have been released since 2003 and breaks them down by category. The document is very long, but the first two pages are hyperlinked; click on the topic for the questions you wish to study.

This document can be a more effective way to review than completing J-Labs. Reflect on which topic(s) you need to study, then go practice all of the released questions in this document that cover that topic.

The answers to these selected challenging questions appears on the last page of the file.

Unit 1 Introduction to Chemistry

Please find the PowerPoint presentations that were used during this unit below.  These can be used to complete the notes if you missed any notes or to review for the test.

Day 1 & 2 - Introduction to Chemistry.  The topics included the branches of chemistry and the scientific method as well as an introduction of Mr. Morris, and an explanation of the syllabus and safety contract.  Don't forget that the safety contract is part of the notes for this unit.

Introductions and Syllabus - Day 1 Homework: Have the last 2 pages (page 9 and 10) of the syllabus signed, cover your textbook to help protect it, and complete the vocabulary worksheet.

Chemistry and the Scientific Method- We discussed the branches of Chemistry and the scientific method.  We also watched a short video and looked at how the scientific method could be applied to the video.

Homework: Experiment Homework Sheet.

Day 3 - Dimensional Analysis.  The topics of this day all involved using dimensional analysis to covert various units.  Density was also discussed on this day.

Day 6 -Laboratory Equipment. Various pieces of lab equipment were discussed along with their uses.

Day 7 - Classifying Matter - This topic covers some basic terms used in chemistry including the difference between elements, compounds, mixtures.  Also covered are a variety of techniques to separate mixtures and a mini chromatography lab was conducted.

Dimensional Analysis Video - This video walks through the solving of two different dimensional analysis problems (a one stepper and a two stepper).  Feel free to use this to study or to review the dimensional analysis problems.  It runs about ten minutes and is in wmv format.  You may want to have the volume on your computer turned down, because my voice is a little loud in the video.
